Approved activities

You may be required to do an approved activity (or a Mutual Obligation activity) to satisfy the activity test. You may be required to do a single approved activity, a combination of approved activities, or an approved activity or activities as well as job search. Sometimes you can choose an approved activity.

Approved activities should be listed in your Activity Agreement.

Common approved activities include:

  • Community Work & Voluntary Work
  • Work For The Dole
  • Full-time Short Course
  • Personal Support Program
  • Rehabilitation Programs
  • Vocational training
  • Paid work experience
  • “Other activities designed to eliminate or reduce any disadvantage the person has in the labour market”.

You are required to undertake adttional “Mutual Obligation” activity or a combination of Mutual Obligation activities if you are unemployed for longer than six months.

Common Mutual Obligation activities include:

  • Part-time work
  • Part-time study
  • Community work
  • Work for the Dole
  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy Programme

Drought Force

You may also volunteer for Drought Force, a Government program where people work on drought-affected properties and on community projects in “exceptional circumstances” areas. You will not have additional activity test requirements if you are involved in this program.
