There are currently four Melbourne metropolitan water businesses, three of which supply water and sewerage services to consumers in the Melbourne metropolitan area. The fourth, Melbourne Water, is the wholesaler of Melbourne's water and is also responsible for sewerage treatment and drainage. The three retailers each have an allocated geographical area in which they supply water and sewerage services to consumers through the reticulated water distribution system - consumers cannot choose which retailer they wish to supply them with water.
