As a member of a cooperative you will hold shares but 'outsiders' cannot invest in a cooperative as there is a requirement that members of the cooperative (that is shareholders) must be active in the business.

A major difference between a cooperative and a company is that all members have the same voting power regardless of the number of shares they hold.
