Cats

Every cat over the age of three months must be registered with their local council by 10 April each year and re-registered annually. Each local council sets its own level of fees.

You are eligible for reduced registration fees if your cat is desexed, over 10 years old, kept for breeding by the proprietor of a domestic animal breeder on registered premises, wearing a permanent identification marker or registered with an applicable organisation. When you register your cat, your local council will provide a numbered registration marker, which is required to be on the cat when it is outside your premises.

Nuisance cats

The Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 (Vic) gives local councils powers to deal with feral, straying and nuisance cats. It is an offence to allow your cat to stray into specified areas if your local council has ordered you to restrain your cat from being in those areas.
