Buying pets

According to the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act1994 (Vic), it is illegal to sell pet animals from market stalls and community-type markets operating on a part-time basis. You can be fined five penalty units for doing so. However, you can buy pets from a number of sources including:

  • a private house, which is not required to comply with code of practice standards
  • a breeder who belongs to a recognised breeder association that is likely to have rules governing the ethics of their member
  • an animal welfare body or council pound (these are a good source of pets because they will only sell those that have had the proper health checks and vaccinations)
  • a registered pet shop.
