Legislation relating to the meat chicken industry

The Primary Industry (Excise) Levies Act 1999 provides for levies to be paid by hatcheries where more than 20 000 meat chickens are hatched in a financial year. These levies, plus matching funding from the Commonwealth, are paid to the Rural Industry Research and Development Council.

The Broiler Chicken Industry Act 1978 (Vic) created the Victorian Industry Negotiating Committee, which facilitates agreements between growers and processors, recommends terms and conditions of contract and acts as a dispute resolution committee.

Although the Act is still in force, the committee is not currently operating and new arrangements for price setting are being negotiated between the Victorian Chicken Meat Council and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
