Legislation relating to the pork industry
Following the deregulation of the pig industry, the Pig Industry Act 2001 (Cth) replaced the Australian Pork Corporation and the Pig Research and Development Corporation with a single industry body, Australian Pork Ltd.
Levies on the slaughter of pigs for human consumption at abattoirs are provided by the Primary Industries (Excise) Levies Act 1999 and related Regulations. They are currently 70 cents for research and development and $1.65 for Australian Pork Ltd.
The federal government matches the industry levies with additional funding for Australian Pork Limited.
