Pet food

A person must not sell, for human consumption, any meat that has been kept or processed in a pet food processing facility or a knackery, or they may be fined 100 penalty units for a first offence or 500 penalty units or two years imprisonment or both for a second or subsequent offence.

For other prohibitions see the Act.

Staining carcases and meat

Any pet-food processing facility other than a knackery does not have to stain meat if:

  • the meat is received for sterilisation or for consignment to another pet-food processing facility for sterilisation
  • the meat is packed in either clean, impervious containers or is frozen, wrapped and stacked on pallets, and those containers or wrappers are clearly marked with the words 'Pet meat. Not for human consumption ' in red lettering of not less than 25 millimetres in height; and marked with a red band not less than five centimetres wide completely around the outside
  • the meat is held, processed and transported under appropriate security conditions specified by the authority to prevent unauthorised access to the meat and unauthorised removal of it from the containers or wrappers.

During the process of preparation for sale, nobody can remove or attempt to remove any blue dye from the surface of pet meat or the offender may be fined $1000.

Labelling pet food for sale

The requirements for labelling pet foods are contained in the Regulations.
