The Australian domestic milk market was deregulated on 1 July 2006 with the full support of state dairy farm organisations. Previously, markets were regulated with each of the states setting farm gate prices for fresh drinking milk.

Under deregulation, state borders are now irrelevant. Quotas, levies and set prices for drinking milk no longer exist and interstate movement of milk is now unrestricted.
