There is no legislation in Victoria relating to livestock transport, but the requirements for all type of livestock are contained in the Codes of Practice. See below.
Transported livestock can suffer various forms of stress including:
- intensive yarding and handling
- deprivation of food and water
- changes in climatic conditions
- overcrowding or isolation
- unfamiliar surroundings, noises and sensations
- insufficient care during transportation.
The National Animal Welfare Committee has produced a number of Australian model codes of practice for the transportation of livestock (see Codes of practice). These national codes are used as models by Australian state governments to develop their own codes of practice or they may serve as guidelines where there is no state code.
