Procedure after impounding by councils
The council must try to find the owners of the impounded livestock as soon as possible and notify them with the details of the impounding and what charges need to be paid. The council must also inform owners that unless the charges are paid and the livestock claimed within seven days, the livestock may be disposed of or sold.
Councils must hold impounded livestock for at least seven days before they may dispose of them and also tell owners about their right to challenge both the council 's impounding of their animals and the impounding charges.
Councils must also keep a detailed record of all impounded livestock that are delivered to any pound operated by the council. The record must be available for public inspection, free of charge, during business hours.
