Livestock identification

Cattle identification

Cattle must be individually identified before they are sold, despatched for sale at saleyards, sent to abbattoirs or knackeries. When moved they must be accompanied by a Vendor Declaration which is an integral part of the NLIS

In 2002 Victoria introduced the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS), a microchip ear tag system for cattle.

The Schedule also contains details of other eartags and tail tags for cattle, but these are at present optional and are expected to be phased out soon as the NLIS becomes fully operational.

For further information on the details of NLIS see 'What is NLIS? ' and 'NLIS EarTags' on the DPI website www.dpi.vic.gov.au .

Obtaining NLIS cattletags

You can order NLIS Tags online through the DPI website www.dpi.vic.gov.au.The DPI website also explains how to apply for a Property Identification Code (PIC) and Vendor Declarations.
