Quarantine laws

The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) is responsible for the administration of quarantine laws. The Quarantine Act 1908 (Cth) sets out the laws that control the importation of goods, animals and plants, empowers quarantine officers to deal with quarantine compliance, and determines the offences for quarantine law breaches.

Quarantine officers have wide-ranging powers to search, seize and treat goods, as well as animals and plants that are suspected of being a quarantine risk.

Under quarantine laws, prohibited imports require a permit. Other imports may require inspection or treatment before being allowed into the country. If you are importing goods into Australia, a notice of importation may be required, though minor items like personal baggage may be exempt from such a notice. If you are considering importing goods, animals or plants into Australia, it would be wise to check requirements through the Victorian AQIS office (03) 9246 6777, freecall 1800 020 504 or email qvic@aqis.com.au.

You can also check the Imports Conditions Database (ICON) at www.aqis.gov.au/icon, which enables you to enter the commodity you wish to import, the country it comes from and its intended use.
