In Victoria, the Department of Primary Industries has published a series of codes of practice dealing with a wide range of animals and animal activities such as management, welfare, transport and a range of other issues. The codes are normally only advisory unless they are specifically referred to in a statute or they are a licensing condition.
In July 2009 the list of Victorian codes included: caged birds, cats and dogs, cattle, deer, emus, goats, horses, petshops, pigs, poultry, rabbits, reptiles, sheep, tethered animals, wildlife during rehabilitation and many others
The Victorian codes are available on the DPI website at www.dpi.vic.gov.au. These codes are based on the national Model Codes of Practice for the Welfare of Animals prepared by the Animal Welfare Committee (AWC) within the Primary Industries Ministerial Council).
