Rural Law Online A guide to the law for Victorian Primary Producers

Small and 'Lifestyle' Farming

A growing number of rural properties are being purchased for 'lifestyle' farming. These tend to be smaller holdings which are used to either undertake non or semi-commercial ‘hobby farming’ activities or niche commercial activities. The legal obligations of those with smaller holdings remain the same as any other rural property owner.

The Department of Primary Industry recognises the importance of this form of rural property ownership and the diverse range of activities which may be undertaken on the property. For many who are moving to these properties, there is a steep learning curve.

An excellent web page has been produced by the DPI, with a summary of issues to consider when purchasing a rural property and an overview of some of the main areas of law and legal compliance obligations associated with living in rural areas. Visit the web page at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/new-landholders .
